Essential Oils to Soothe Stress & Anxiety

In a society where the pace and demands of modern life is quite frankly, frightening, it is no wonder more and more humans are struggling with the symptoms of Anxiety and Stress.

”Anxiety disorders are some of the most common psychiatric disorders, with potentially debilitating consequences on individual function. Existing pharmacotherapies for anxiety disorders are limited by delay to therapeutic effect, dependence, tolerance, withdrawal, and abuse potential.” (Malcolm, 2018)

Anxiety tends to be a state in which we are in fight-or-flight. This is also know as a sympathetic nervous system response. In this state, it is harder for our body to restore, find hormonal balance, think rationally, digest food well, detoxify and burn fat. There are many more things which anxiety affects, but the psychological burden of anxiety can feel crippling, irrational and at times too painful to carry on.

It is really important that I stress I am not a doctor & I do not intent to diagnose, treat or cure any conditions. I am going from my own personal journey from anorexia and severe suicidal feelings alongside anxiety & from working with over 500 people over 10 years in the wellness industry. Please take only the information which feels in alignment with you, and I always suggest finding the support of a good therapist or doctor who can support you to heal or manage your condition. Please contact me for recommendations.

What I will say, is that essential oils are not a cure all, but they are a form support and can help align the body with a parasympathetic state in order to begin finding some relief from the strangling grip of anxiety & can be “used as an intervention for reducing the anxiety levels and improving the sleep quality” (Soo Lee, 2013). This helps create calm so that you can begin to process and heal on an energetic and emotional level, the underlying fears which propel the symptoms of anxiety.

Many essential oils on the market do not work effectively, this is because even though they say they are 100% pure, very often, they are not. This is because legislation on essential oils allows only 4% pure essential oils in the bottle and the rest is actually synthetics, carrier oils and other things not specified. Be VERY careful where you invest your hard earned money in essential oils. To know more about safe, effective and useful oils, click here.

  • Lavender - Yep, you guessed it. Lavender has been studied many times & it has a very powerful effect on the body for relaxing the nervous system, lowering the heart rate, lowering blood pressure. I am a huge lover of lavender and you can use doTERRA Lavender even in some oat milk ( 1 drop is enough) for a night time relaxing tonic. You can use directly on the soles of the feet or even diffuse in your room.

  • Wild Orange - Wild Orange is not only one of the cheaper oils, it is a joy for both children and adults. I know many teachers who use this in their classroom to calm children down and swear by it. I have clients whose children were having night terrors and now they have stopped. Wild Orange is a mood balancer, so it will bring you Up if you are too low and bring you down if you are too high. You can add to chocolate, water, diffuse or even use on soles of feet. I have linked some bostin studies on wild orange at the bottom of here.

  • Copaiba - Holy mother FORKER! Copaiba is an alternative to hemp based CBD Products. Unlike cannabis, copaiba is sourced from a Native American tree. doTERRA use co-impact sourcing to work with the indigenous people of the area to carefully source copaiba. I use this everyday, morning and night 2 drops under the tongue. It REALLY helps me, especially as sometimes I get these weird migraine and caffeine jitters (if I get a dodgy cuppa) and within 10 mins I am right as rain. Also when my eating disorder patternology resurfaces, copaiba gives me assurance and perspective. Check out the science behind copaiba and how it nurtures the endocannabinoid system here.

  • doTERRA Console Blend/Peace blend - Now these are very very special blends. My own personal experience is that console is effective for me because the root of my anxiety is abandonment, abuse and grieve. For my sister, she finds peace blend generally better. If you’re serious about using the emotional oils, then definitely get in touch as there is a whole emotional aromatherapy system using blends of Forgive, Passion, Motivate, Peace, Console, Cheer.

  • Melissa - Used in a couple of doTERRA blends, Melissa is a highly valuable oil but it has extremely powerful properties for mental health. It has a lemon sherbet type smell.
”Melissa officinalis, also known as lemon balm, received the name “Melissa” because of its sweet, fresh, citrus-like fragrance, which was known to attract bees (Melissa is Greek for “honey bee”). As one of our rarest and most expensive oils, Melissa has a wide range of health benefits and uses.* Melissa is used as a flavor in teas and ice cream as well as with some fish dishes. Because of its positive effect on mood, Melissa has long been used to calm feelings of tension and nervousness. Diffusing Melissa at night can help initiate a restful sleep environment and promote emotional well-being. Melissa may also help to support a healthy immune system.” (

  • Serenity Blend - I HAD some super highly strung, insomniac clients. This oil is making them over sleep if they have more than 1 drop. Enough said! Potent, Pure, Effective. Less than 1 drop can be enough to regain deep sleep and calmness.
