Essential Oils for Hormones

I have had some real struggles bringing my hormones back into balance, overcoming sexual shame and generally with femininity and I sometimes can still! I am reading an amazing book right now about essential oils and hormones and there is so much fabulous in depth biochemistry on how pure CPTG essential oils such as doTERRA work within our body as plant medicine.

There are a few oils which I believe every woman should be using if she is struggling with anything related to hormones, femininity, stress, weight problems or mood.

  • Clary Sage - This superstar oil can be used for many of women’s troubles. We aren’t really supposed to experience bad periods or bad menopause, if our hormones were truly in check and our liver was at its best. It can be used for menstruation, menopause and childbirth alike and it is a powerful antispasmodic so great for period pains.
    Emotional Uses: antidepressant, stressful times, cleansing emotional toxicity & grounding

    Physical Uses: antispasmodic, deodorant, emmenagogue, high blood pressure, sedative, balances uterine and female hormone related challenges, asthmatic spasms and greasy hair.

    Blends Well With: Bergamot, Cedarwood, Roman Chamomile, Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Neroli, Orange, Rose, Sandalwood & Ylang Ylang

    Contraindications: non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitizing; but avoid during pregnancy

  • Geranium - I dislike the smell of geranium, personally, but some people just love it. Really, it is a powerful oil for many things. Known as one of the queen’s of oils, this oil has even been used for dysentery and diahorreoa. It is a powerful anti aging oil for your skin and also, it is very powerful for detoxification, so great for flushing out the lymphatic system. It has a powerful ability to balance hormones and so this is a great choice for women wanting to take control of their menopause and perimenopausal symptoms.
    Physical Uses: astringen (not ideal for dry vata constitutions), diuretic, antiseptic, tonic, antibiotic, antispasmodic, women’s health issues, acne, cellulite, dull skin, calms nervous system, stimulates adrenal glands.

    Emotional Uses: uplifting, all-over balancing effect like an adaptogen, depression, stress

    Blends Well With: Basil, Bergamot, Clary Sage, Fennel, Grapefruit, Juniper Berry, Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass, Neroli

    Cautions: non-toxic, non-irritant and generally non-sensitizing; can cause sensitivity in some people; avoid during pregnancy. Use with carrier oil.

  • Jasmine - I frikin LOVE jasmine. It is known as an aphrodisiac, and boy oh boy, it totally is. I use this to get my partner in the mood ( a little behind my ears and on my neck - coupled with ylang ylang and he’s putty in my hands). Lovely Jasmine is very powerful for mood, lifting depression and also encourages the skin to produce collagen so I like to use it on my skin :)
    In addition, this is a great oil for women to use post childbirth and labour for recovery!
    Personally, I used this oil to help me move past feelings of sexual shame and abusive relationships.
    Emotional Uses: anxiety, insomnia, stress, healing from sexual trauma

    Physical Uses: aphrodisiac, women’s health, tonic to the reproductive system, dry skin, anti-inflammatory, powerful anti aging in skin

    Blends Well With: generally works with all oil & other aphrodisiac oils especially Sandalwood and Ylang-ylang

    Cautions: non-irritating, moderate skin sensitization when used topically

  • Rose - I love doTERRA Rose oil. It takes approx 242,000 rose petals to make one doTERRA rose 10ml roller. Yes, the value of rose is extremely high, but it is because it is a very very special oil.

    ’Behold the magnificence that is Rose oil. With more than 300 chemical compounds, it is one of the most complex oils that exists. In fact, not all of rose’s chemical makeup is known making its full therapeutic benefit a bit of a mystery. However, it does have a long list of known properties including: anti-anxiety, antibacterial, antidepressant, antiseptic, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, astringent, laxative, sedative and tonic. Rose is a multifaceted female oil. It is ideal for functional infertility, regulating menstruation and relieving cramps and excessive bleeding.’*

    I love rose for heart healing, when I am feeling slightly unurtured. It has a lovely scent reminiscent of summer days.. so beautiful and totally worth getting!!! It is known for being the queen of essential oils, as THE BEST oil for you to move into more perfect feminine health.

    Physical Uses: menopause, mature skin, wrinkles, balancing skin tone

    Emotional Uses: depression, self-love, love, compassion, heartbreak, grief, lack of empathy

    Blends Well With: Angelica Root, Bergamot, Roman Chamomile, Clove, Clary Sage, Geranium, Frankincense, Melissa, Rosewood, Sandalwood, and Ylang-ylang.

    Cautions: non-toxic, non-irritating, non-sensitizing
